Support Request: System Security Manager - Password Changed

Description

I install the SiteKiosk Online Client with the following command line:

"SiteKioskOnline.exe" /exenoui /exelog C:\Temp\SiteKioskOnline_EXEInstall.log /i // /qb!- /l* C:\Temp\SiteKioskOnline_MSIInstall.log SECURESITEKIOSKUSER=true SITEKIOSKUSERPASSWORD=[RedactedCustomPassword] INSTALLVNC=false

After the installation, I attempt to open System Security Manager, and I get the error in the attached image:

"Password Changed - The password for the restricted user was changed outside of this application. The password is required to display or modify the system settings. If you don't know your new password, click here to restore the default. Please enter the new password."

If I enter the [RedactedCustomPassword], I receive the error: "User credentials are not usable."

If I try to set the default password using the link, I get the error message: "The password does not meet the password policy requirements. Check the minimum password length, password complexity requirements and password history requirements." (These requirements are why install the software and Secure SiteKiosk local user account with a custom password in the first place.)

This process worked with SiteKiosk Classic. What steps do I need to take so my [RedactedCustomPassword] works with System Security Manager? Are there any special characters that cannot be used with the SiteKiosk Online Client Secure SiteKiosk local user account?

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. You may encounter this issue if you are part of a domain with strong rules on how user accounts are managed (especially by another application). You can consider testing a device that has not been enrolled on the domain to confirm this feature works.

You can test also with another local standard user account, where you can adjust the Auto Start settings to point to use that local user. This will determine if the issue is with SiteKiosk client versus a domain issue. There are cases where using a domain standard service user may be required.

Note that certain Windows OS security features are stronger in domain environments with Windows 11 23H2 compared to Windows 10 22H2. You can share more details with us at: support-america(at)sitekiosk.com

Best regards,
Adnre.

This method works with SiteKiosk Classic without any issues so it does not seem to be related to the organization's domain or policy.

Hello,

Thank you for the update. There are some commands that may not work with the installer we use to install our products. The order of commands is also important. You can try this format to confirm if it works in your environment:

"SiteKioskOnline.exe" /exenoui /qn SECURESITEKIOSKUSER=true SITEKIOSKUSERPASSWORD=[RedactedCustomPassword] INSTALLVNC=false /l* C:\SiteKioskOnline_MSIInstall.log

The log file will be created or overwritten, but the folder needs to exist for this command to work. You can find examples here: https://www.advancedinstaller.com/user-guide/exe-setup-file.html

Best regards,
Andre.

I'm still getting the same error message for System Security Manager, and when I try to enable Quick Start for all users (as a local admin), I get the message: "The credentials are invalid, please check whether the domain, username, and password are entered correctly."

(1) Does copying the Startup.json from another computer cause this to happen?

(2) Below are the commands I send to install SiteKiosk Online in this order. Is there something I'm doing incorrectly or out of order, or is there something below that could be causing this issue? This same process works with SiteKiosk Classic on the same device using the same password (using the commands and files for that software of course).

Install SiteKiosk Online Client:
"SiteKioskOnline.exe" /exenoui /exelog C:\Temp\SiteKioskOnline_EXEInstall.log /qn SECURESITEKIOSKUSER=true SITEKIOSKUSERPASSWORD=[Redacted] INSTALLVNC=false /l* C:\Temp\SiteKioskOnline_MSIInstall.log

Copy Auto Registration File:
robocopy.exe "%~dp0Config" "%Public%\Documents\SiteKiosk RemoteClient" "autoregistration.config" /IT /XX /NP /NFL /NDL /r:1 /w:2

Copy Auto Startup File:
robocopy.exe "%~dp0Config" "%ProgramFiles%\SiteKiosk Online" "Startup.json" /IT /XX /NP /NFL /NDL /r:1 /w:2

Apply System Security Defaults:
"%ProgramFiles%\SiteKiosk Online\SiteKiosk.SystemPatcher.exe" applydefaultsettings

Enable Saved Startup:
"%ProgramFiles%\SiteKiosk Online\SiteKiosk.Automation.exe" /i "%ProgramFiles%\SiteKiosk Online\Startup.json"

Reboot Device

Hello,

Thank you for the update. This may not be the cause, but you will need to remove the EXELOG from your install command and ensure that C:\Temp folder actually exist on the device. SECURESITEKIOSKUSER=true is not need because this is the default behavior. Using "/l*v" at the end will give a verbose log of your install attempt. Try again (uninstall the program and...) with this command to see if there are any improvements:

"SiteKioskOnline.exe" /exenoui /qn SITEKIOSKUSERPASSWORD=[Redacted] INSTALLVNC=false /l*v C:\SiteKioskOnline_MSIInstall.log

If this does not work, try creating a new local user and attempt to set Auto Start Settings with those credentials. If you get that same error message again, please email us with details of your environment and your device (this is a public forum).

Best regards,
Andre.
