Support Request: Automatic program patcher

Reproduction

See the description. We use Polish Windows XP Pro with all current updates.

Description

When you activate Program Patcher (Maintenance->Activate automatic program patcher checkbox - on by default)
for some of our terminals it requires a user to confirm terminal reset after all system scheduled restarts.
Since this is considered as an unnnecessary burden for our customers we tried to get rid of this problem by:
- turning the patcher off,
- scheduling restarts sparser (once a week)
- disabling restarts (which is not good for Windows XP).
In each case SiteKiosk seems to continue some part of the automatic program patcher functionality
and after a couple of days resumes the requirement for a user to confirm system resets.

Hello,

Generally the program patcher just makes some presets in the Windows Registry.
(It e.g. disables the Readmode from Adobe Reader).
Details in the “patcher.xml” that is stored at “…\SiteKiosk\SystemSecurity”
You first may check if updating the program patcher makes any difference.

>>>for some of our terminals it requires a user to confirm terminal reset after all system scheduled restarts.<<<
Which reset will be made here?
Is it from an addional application you installed on the system beside SiteKiosk?
What is the difference between the terminals requiring a user confirmation and the terminals that not require it?

We use the last one.

We use only SiteKiosk's functionality to schedule system restarts.

Our cutomer is a bank which has got branches all over the country in a heterogenous network. We cannot control all its network devices and settings.

Hello,

Please describe exactly what happens when you restart the system.
Which dialog we are talking about?

There are two dialog boxes with the title SiteKiosk:
- Please wait while Windows configures SiteKiosk,
- You must restart your system for the configuration changes made to SiteKiosk to take effect. Click Yes to restart now or No if you plan to restart later.

Hello,

The first dialog “Please wait while Windows configures SiteKiosk” applies to all Windows services.

SiteKiosk waits for all Windows services which are configured to automatic startup (-->Control Panel-->Administrative Tools-->Services) before the SiteKiosk Browser starts.

But the second dialog “You must restart your system for the configuration changes made to SiteKiosk to take effect. Click Yes to restart now or No if you plan to restart later.” is usually not displayed when starting SiteKiosk. This is a dialog from the installer.

If you didn’t configure anything special which starts the installer of SiteKiosk when you login it must apply to any special domain or group policy in your system environment.

You may check if it also happens when you login manually to the SiteKiosk user account and then start SiteKiosk.
If you need to check / change any user dependent settings within the SiteKiosk user account here the description about how to get access:
http://www.provisio.com/en-US/CustomerSupportCenter/ArticleDetails.aspx?ArticleID=5826

Alternatively you may test if it also happens when using any other Windows user account (e.g. a domain user) for the auto start mode.
That is possible with the customized startup options:
http://www.provisio.com/helpconsole/SiteKiosk%20Help/en-US/default.htm?select_starting_mode.htm
